Editor for Internal “Connections” staff magazine

⁠⁠⁠The Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) is part of Australia’s Department of Defence. DSTG is the Australian Government’s lead agency responsible for applying science and technology to protect and defend Australia and its national interests and to support the Government’s national security needs.

Headed by the Chief Defence Scientist, DSTG employs around 2400 staff, predominantly scientists, engineers, IT specialists, and technicians.

DSTG has a presence in nearly every state and territory in Australia. It has its national headquarters in Canberra with research facilities in Melbourne, Edinburgh (in Adelaide), Innisfail, Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, and Scottsdale.

DSTG works closely with the innovation, science, and technology (IS&T) communities to enhance its ability to support Australia’s defence and national security capabilities.

As the corporate communication team within DSTG, Defence Science Communications (DSC) produces an internal employee magazine called Connections that is made available online via the DSTG intranet and email. The magazine is published 11 times a year, once a month from February to December (both months inclusive).

In addition to the traditional magazine format, content from Connections will be used on the intranet homepage, on DSTG’s external website, and for social media in a mix of long and short formats. It is expected that the editor ensures that at least half of the content created is suitable for further publication in this way and that content opportunities discovered are shared to enable further exploitation.

DSTG seeks a magazine editor/content producer to produce Connections for a period of 12 months. This contract will start at the earliest available time and is offered with no further extensions.

The specified personnel will be responsible for one issue of the Connections magazine per month from the starting date of the contract for a duration of 12 months. Each issue comprises a minimum of 8 feature stories, 4 regular staff information updates, 3 getting to know our people stories, 6 news in brief, and other items of interest. The final copy is determined and approved by the Director Defence Science Communications or the identified representative.

Where Connections stories are deemed suitable for use across DSTG's other media, they are to be re-versioned by the contractor in consultation with DSC staff.

All Connections articles and media must be stored on Objective, DSTG’s file management system.
