In December 2022, the Queensland Government announced a $10 million investment in an Engine Immobiliser Trial to supply up to 20,000 engine immobilisers for residents in Cairns, Townsville, and Mt Isa.

The Trial is proposed to start in July 2023 and run for approximately twelve (12) months.

Aims

The aim is to reduce crimes associated with car theft and increase security and safety among Queensland communities, including enhancing community confidence.

Engagement with Service Providers ahead of the Trial

QPS is seeking responses from local Queensland businesses who currently provide immobiliser installation services. Businesses need to meet the pre-qualification criteria to participate in the Trial. Interested businesses are encouraged to provide their information and answer questions on QTenders ahead of the Trial. This will serve as an EOI. These businesses will be contacted to formally register for the Trial in July 2023 (Stage 2).

This EOI aims to include as many small businesses that meet the criteria as possible to ensure the success of the Trial.

Proposed Trial Process

It is proposed that residents in the Trial locations (Cairns, Townsville and Mt Isa) (the Customer) will have an opportunity to apply online for a $500 voucher towards the cost of the supply and installation of an engine immobiliser. The Customers will present the voucher to a Supplier/Installer who has been registered and approved for the supply and installation of engine immobilisers as part of this Trial. A qualified installer (Supplier/Installer) will install an approved immobiliser device selected by the Customer as appropriate to their vehicle. The Customer will use their voucher towards the cost of the transaction and the Supplier/Installer will redeem that voucher after the installation has occurred. Redemption will occur via the same online platform they used to register as a Supplier/Installer for this Trial in Stage 2. Supplier/Installers will be required to upload evidence of installation by a qualified installer at the time of redemption.

Note: Eligibility for a voucher is restricted to residents of Cairns, Townsville, and Mt Isa within specified postcodes, however Suppliers/Installers can be located outside of the Trial zones.
