Almost 60% of the native vegetation within Fitzroy Basin Association’s NRM region has been cleared and much of the remaining native vegetation is highly fragmented. The remaining native vegetation, along with most of the agricultural land, is extremely vulnerable to ongoing threats, including invasive species, dryland salinity, soil erosion, altered fire regimes, biodiversity loss, and climate change. FBA is currently working on various revegetation projects to restore tree cover and improve ecological function, and landscape resilience and support a sustainable agricultural industry. FBA has been approved to fund a project under the Queensland Government’s Natural Resources Recovery Program, aimed at improving science and knowledge for increasing native woody vegetation within the Fitzroy Region.
This project will develop a model to identify priority locations for cost-effective, ecologically important revegetation efforts. FBA anticipates that this model will enable targeted future revegetation projects, and thus lead to a greater long-term increase in the extent of native tree cover than would be possible without such a model. The overall legacy of the activities undertaken, and the products developed in this project will catalyze a long-term improvement in community understanding of the ecological, cultural, and commercial benefits provided by native trees, generate mapped priority areas on which to focus medium-term revegetation efforts and, eventually lead to an increase in the cover of native trees within central Queensland agricultural landscapes.
