The Network and Infrastructure (N&I) Division of the Public Transport Authority (PTA) is responsible for the management and maintenance of the metropolitan passenger railway infrastructure. N&I currently uses a Track Maintenance Services contract to deliver maintenance requirements. This work focuses on corrective (breakdown) and preventative maintenance.

As the PTA’s rail network ages and assets begin reaching the end of life, a more considered approach is needed to complement this reactive approach and realise gains in asset reliability and performance. Based on practices in the United Kingdom and other Australian jurisdictions, a program of cocondition-basedajor overhaul and renewal works focusing on addressing significant defects and end-of-life assets on a rail corridor-based approach is being developed to ensure the PTA rail network remains safe and reliable (represented by the right-hand box in the diagram above). This program is being termed the Rail Revitalisation Program (RRP).
