NGN - Deep phosphorus: research validation, economic viability and extension in South West Qld
Tender ID: 514987
Tender Details
Tender Description
At National Grower Network (NGN) forums in both Mungindi and Meandarra, growers expressed an interest in testing deep phosphorus (P) placement to increase their yield potential. The current barrier to adoption is that growers are unsure if this application will work in their area and if the response obtained is economically viable for local soil types. The opportunity, through this investment, is to build grower confidence in the economic value of application of P at depth. The investment is to provide growers in the Mungindi and Meandarra regions with replicated and demonstration trials in conjunction with economic analysis to evaluate the effectiveness and viability of deep P application to increase yield and profit. It will be important to utilise existing calculators to identify the rates required to achieve economic results and to empower growers to utilise in-field demonstrations to ground truth research and financial findings. To achieve the proposed solution, a combination of replicated trials and paddock scale demonstrations will be established where (i) P is surface applied as ‘current grower practise’ and (ii) P is applied deeper in the soil profile (15 to 20 cm) as a deep P comparison. The input costs will be recorded along with grain yield and profit for the proceeding two years to determine yield and profit differences.
