AgriFutures Honey Bee and Pollination Request for Quote: Varroa destructor – what do we know, what can we learn from others and where are the knowledge gaps?
Tender ID: 505548
Tender Details
Tender Description
The AgriFutures Honey Bee and Pollination Program is seeking services of an individual or organisation to undertake a review of research conducted on the management of Varroa destructor.
Varroa destructor was identified during a routine inspection on sentinel hives at the Port of Newcastle on 22 June 2022. As of the 22 August 2022, 99 properties with 5500 hives have been detected with varroa, which has resulted in an exclusion zone of 520,000 hectares. This incursion of varroa has the capacity to transform the Australian beekeeping industry if the pest becomes endemic.
To help the industry prepare for the possibility of living with varroa, now or in the future, it is vital that we understand what is known about how to manage and control varroa in Australia and relevant countries, what is the likely spread and speed of spread of varroa, and what the impacts on beekeepers will be. We are seeking a literature review on the likely epidemiology, control methods (including IPM), and the interaction between varroa and other pests/diseases/viruses in the Australian context.
