Tender Description

Rio Tinto operates over 1700km of rail network which runs across 52 bridges through the Pilbara. Detailed visual (Level 2) inspections are required for twenty four [24] of the Rio Tinto Iron Ore Rail network bridges in 2022.

The purpose of the level 2 inspections (in combination with alternate condition monitoring assessment) is to ascertain the existing condition of the rail network bridges and allow for the early detection of asset defects, defect severity and the required routine or specific maintenance work to ensure the continued safe operation of the rail network.

Guidance regarding common defects and condition states for specific components will be provided at tender stage in the form of the detailed visual (level 2) bridge inspection guidance note. The guidance note also provides a template to assist in evaluation of the condition of the bridge components.

The objective of the level 2 bridge inspection is to ensure that the bridge continues to perform its function under acceptable conditions of safety and with minimized cost of maintenance. The level 2 bridge inspection is undertaken to ensure the following specific objectives:

  • Ensure that the structure continues to satisfy present service and safety requirements for rail traffic;
  • Record the current physical and functional condition of the bridge;
  • Confirm that any previous repairs carried out are functioning satisfactorily;
  • Identify any inventory changes from the previous inspection;
  • Provide feedback to design, construction and maintenance engineers as appropriate;
  • Provide information to determine the need for establishing or revising the load carrying capacity of the bridge;
  • Determine improvement and maintenance needs and identify anticipated future problems and
  • Establish a history of performance.

Whilst guidance exists to assist with the assessment, there is an expectation that the assessments will be undertaken with a high degree of rigour and defects affecting individual or grouped components will receive evaluation specific to the situation considering all relevant surrounding aspects. These inspections are required to be carried out by an appropriately qualified and experienced structural engineer(s).
