Tender Description

This project will see a series of five artworks by artists or designers installed throughout five levels of the Argyle Street Car Park.

Background
In 1998 the City of Hobart's then Project Architect Peter McFarlane, commissioned five murals for the Argyle Street Car Park lift foyers. The artworks were painted by 'Johnson' whose identity currently remains unknown to the Council. These artworks have been enjoyed by people using the carpark for the past 23 years, however they are now in a dilapidated condition and need replacing. The new artwork will be a part of a multi-year investment into the Argyle Street Car Park facility.

Purpose
The current murals depicting Tasmanian wildlife kayaking, cycling, weightlifting, high-jumping and performing gymnastics have provided historic wayfinding markers. As a social infrastructure asset and key point of arrival into the CBD, new artworks in the Argyle Street Car Park will be enjoyed by a diverse cross section of the community including children and families, visitors from outer suburbs and interstate, car park patrons, Woolworths and Royal Hobart Hospital patrons, tourists and intergenerational users. Hobart is a place for everyone to use and enjoy and the new artworks will appeal to a wide demographic, be vibrant and integrated into the surrounding environment.

The artwork will also aim to enhance the cultural fabric of the Hobart CBD and continue to support wayfinding amenity within the carpark.

Where
The artworks will be located on five levels of the Argyle Street Car Park on the internal west facing wall of the Wellington Court lift foyers.

When
The artworks will be installed between March and May 2022.

Applications are now open and will close at 5 pm Monday 13 December 2021. All submissions and queries are to be emailed to connectedhobart@hobartcity.com.au, or enquiries please call 0416 977 459.
