Unit Welfare Officer, 1 Combat Service Support Battalion
Role
The 1 Combat Service Support Battalion (1 CSSB) Welfare Officer is responsible for assisting in the management of 1 CSSB soldier and officer welfare on behalf of the Commanding Officer (CO). As well as the unit’s welfare policy including the Unit Welfare Plan, being abreast of welfare related Defence Instructions and making policy recommendations to the CO on matters designed to improve the welfare of 1 CSSB members and their families.
This role includes liaison with external agencies such as Defence Community Organisation (DCO), Defence Veterans Affairs (DVA), the National Welfare Co-ordination Centre (NWCC) and other supporting organisations for both the management of individuals and planning/conduct of unit-level welfare activities. They are also required to act as the unit point of contact and, where appropriate, respond to the welfare requirements of unit members and their families and ADF welfare support agencies.
The Unit Welfare Officer is required to perform the following duties:
- Work on a military base with Defence members who are requiring assistance for a range of needs such as physical injuries and mental health
- Proactively manage multiple clients and liaise with stakeholders to facilitate a timely return to deployable status
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of ADF including its structure, procedures and terminology to facilitate optimum outcomes for clients
- Carry out a variety of welfare and risk assessments
- Produce complex reports requiring high attention to detail
- Ability to brief Chain of Command on complex welfare cases and make valuable contribution in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment
- Work efficiently across a varied caseload to ensure reports are created and submitted in line with Defence policy and procedures
- Refer clients to further services if required.
- Maintain confidentiality between the Defence member and chain of command.
Skills and experience
- Specifically, we are seeking individuals with a range of the following skills and experience:
- A Cert IV in social work.
- Experience in case management, particularly the management of complex and sensitive cases.
- Possess excellent communication skills.
- Experience working in Defence.
Additional Information
- This is a contract position with a high likelihood of extension
- You will receive a high level of guidance from a very experienced manager and team, but autonomy is a must in this role
- Will be required to obtain a security clearance prior to undertaking role
- Knowledge of Defence prior to undertaking the role is not required, but highly valuable.
