Tender Description
The Dunedin Heritage Fund can provide incentive funding for a wide range of works.
These include:
- Essential repairs, stabilisation or core structural works.
- Restoration projects.
- Upgrades to code/regulation standards to enable contemporary use of heritage places, e.g. fire, earthquake, access provisions.
- Specific “like with like” material replacement/maintenance projects that protect the integrity of heritage buildings (e.g. slate or timber shingle roofing; copper gutters/downpipes; wooden joinery; stained glass; stonework; pressed tin ceilings; etc)
- Preparation of heritage conservation plans.
- Emergency or protective works to protect heritage fabric.
The Heritage Fund Committee has the ability to make grants to the owner or occupier of any historic place within Dunedin for the purpose of assisting that owner or occupier to manage, maintain or preserve that historic place.
Owners/occupiers of any heritage building may apply. Generally, preference for assistance will be given to:
- Buildings/structures listed as Historic Places on the New Zealand Heritage List by Heritage New Zealand and/or scheduled as heritage buildings/structures/sites in the Dunedin City District Plan and/or mentioned in the Dunedin Contextual Thematic History;
- Places listed as Wāhi Tūpuna, Wāhi Tapu or Wāhi Tapu areas on the New Zealand Heritage List by Heritage New Zealand or scheduled as Wāhi Tūpuna on the Dunedin City District Plan;
- Buildings/structures in a Historic Area in the New Zealand Heritage List and/or within a Heritage Precinct of the Dunedin City District Plan;
- Places identified as archaeological sites in the Dunedin City District Plan;
- Places likely to meet the criteria for inclusion on the New Zealand Heritage List or the Dunedin City District Plan’s heritage schedule.
Funding round dates
The Heritage Fund has four funding rounds per year. The last round of the financial year 2021-2022 closes on 30th April 2022.
The closing dates for each round of the financial year 2021-2022 are as follows:
- 31st July 2021 – for August committee meeting.
- 31st October 2021 – for November committee meeting.
- 31st January 2022 – for February committee meeting.
- 30th April 2022 – for May committee meeting.

Please note that the GST element of project costs are not eligible for heritage funding and applicants are advised to seek other means of covering this cost prior to making their application.
