TasPorts released its Port Master Plan in August 2018 to guide a coordination, statewide vision for the future of Tasmania's multi-port system. Following industry engagement over the last two years, TasPorts has evolved its planning in some aspects of the Port Master Plan by developing several growth initiatives.
As planning for these projects progresses, TasPorts invites the supply, design and construction industry to participate in a briefing. At the briefing, TasPorts will provide updates on the status and scopes of upcoming major projects and seek feedback from participants regarding market capacity, procurement methodology, and potential innovations suitable for the projects.

This Briefing forms part of an ongoing program of industry engagement in relation to these projects.

TasPorts key growth projects to be presented at the Industry briefing are as follows:

1. Devonport East Redevelopment Project
Aligned with its Master Plan commitment, TasPorts is planning to deliver a $240 million investment, which will see generational change for Tasmania at the Port of Devonport. The investment will significantly increase capacity for both freight and vehicles, whilst facilitating future growth.

TasPorts has been working closely with port users to ensure port infrastructure that actively facilitates and enables growth in throughput over a 25-year horizon for Bass Strait shipping services.

The Tasmanian Government has approved the project's business case and major project planning is now well progressed.
The project will be staged over a five year period from commencement, pre project planning, design and procurement works are currently underway.

As TasPorts progresses its planning for the project, the project team is continuing to:
- engage with port users to determine long term requirements;
- plan the layout and configuration of the port;
- undertake upfront investigative prework, including survey, environmental and geotechnical investigations, and
- undertake preliminary engineering and design development for the works.
The first major maritime package of work is expected to be released to market via EOI shortly after the Industry Briefing.

2. Burnie Export Gateway
The Port of Burnie was recognised as a key component of TasPorts Master Plan in 2018. Following further industry consultation, in 2020, TasPorts publicly released a major initiative to develop a critical export gateway at the Port of Burnie, which will lay the foundation for exponential growth in Tasmanian mineral exports to global markets.
The Burnie Export Gateway initiative will bring significant trade and economic benefits to the state, enabling capacity for larger vessels to berth and ensuring fit-for-purpose terminal infrastructure.
Through a combination of dredging and the development of landside infrastructure, the Port of Burnie offers exponential opportunities for Tasmanian businesses to export bulk minerals, dry bulk cargo, forestry products and international containers.

The project scope includes:
- Capital dredging to accommodate Panamax vessels
- Port infrastructure development to increase volume of on port cargo operations.
- Development of ship loading infrastructure
Reclamation of land to build a multi-commodity terminal for minerals (bulk and concentrate), and forestry exports.

3. Macquarie Wharf Redevelopment
The Port of Hobart was highlighted as a key component of the Master Plan, with significant opportunity identified to enable growth in the tourism, trade and Antarctic sectors.

The redevelopment of Macquarie Wharf will enable:
- a multi-user Antarctic Precinct enabling growth in the Antarctic science and research sector;
- a dedicated cruise ship terminal with capacity to berth the new Oasis-class cruise vessels
- an expanded log and container storage facility to support increased throughput of export logs and containers.
The Project Scope will include the realignment of the Macquarie Wharf Berths 4,5,6, allowing for a continuous quay line and finger pier. The scope will also include:
- Construction of associated fender beam and berthing infrastructure
- Installation of dedicated shore power
- Service upgrades
- Construction of additional passenger terminal facilities for processing and disembarkation from Macquarie Wharfs 4 and 5
- Freight yard and traffic reconfiguration

4. Tasports Sustaining Maintenance and Capital Pipeline
TasPorts will continue to implement its rolling 10 Year Infrastructure Plan. This Plan provides a framework for planning, prioritising and delivering infrastructure investment and maintenance at each port.

Recent work underway or completed includes:
- TasPorts rolling wharf remediation programs
- Burnie Chip Export Terminal (BCET) maintenance and upgrade program
- Replacement of the BCET Shiploader Bogies to renew the existing bogie wheels that were at high risk of failure due to fatigue.
- Refurbishment of the Bellman Hangar at the Devonport Airport to facilitate additional tenancies
- Completion of the Bird Friendly Lighting Project on Flinders Island
- Implementation of the Smart Power Pedestals around Constitution and Victoria Dock
- Completion of the safety improvement works to pedestrian access through the Port of Bell Bay
- Safety improvements and compliance works on the safety access ladders at Ports around the state
- Expansion of the fertiliser storage area in the existing shed at Devonport 3 West<
