Next Gen Battery Storage Program
Looking to invest in battery storage? You’ve come to the right place. The Next Gen program is one of the largest battery rollouts in the world, beginning in the ACT in 2016.
The $25 million program was created to encourage the rollout of solar energy storage in the ACT; assist the development of ACT-based energy storage industry, research, and training; and extend ACT’s national leadership position in renewables.
The Next Gen program requires external providers to deliver a rebate on battery installation for residential and business premises. To receive the rebate on an installed solar battery system, you will need to use one of the participating providers:

- Mondiaux Solar
- RBE
- Reposit
- Select Electrical and Solar Solutions
- Solahart
- Solar4Life
- Solargain
- Solarhub
- SouthAus Solar
- Stag Electrical
- Stored Solar
- Sunstak
While the following providers have been selected to participate in the Next Gen program, the ACT Government isn’t endorsing the companies or their products. Services offered may vary between providers. If you’re considering battery storage you need to evaluate the products and options on offer and use your own judgement to choose the provider that is right for you.
Before you contact a provider for a quote, here is some general information which may help inform your choice about whether to install a solar battery system.
Considering battery storage?
Battery storage systems allow you to store electricity created by your solar panels or other sources (like the electric grid).
Throughout the day, your rooftop solar panels capture energy from the sun, which is turned into power for your home or business by an inverter. Extra energy generated by your solar panels is sent to your battery. This means you can use the stored energy when you need it most, for example:
- At night,
- When it’s overcast, or
- At peak times when electricity prices are higher.
Battery storage systems can:
- Help you save on your energy bills,
- Store extra energy created by your solar panels,
- Allow you to use the stored energy when you need it most,
- Provide electricity to your home during a power outage (depending on your battery system), and
- Help the environment as they are a renewable energy source.
How much does a battery cost?
System costs and payback periods vary significantly depending on different features including but not limited to:
- energy usage and electricity prices,
- technology type,
- brand, and
- system size.
You should ask these questions and arrange itemised quotes from several providers.
What is an eligible system?
To be eligible for a rebate, your new battery system must:
- be a new system that has not already been supported by the program
- be connected to the electricity grid
- be coupled with solar panels
- include a new or existing inverter that meets the Next Gen requirements.*
Solar panel systems currently supported by a premium feed in tariff (FiT) are not eligible for support under this program. However, you may be able to add a new solar and battery system at your residence to access the rebate.
For eligible systems, the rebate is automatically included in the cost of the system quoted by providers.
*Providers will be able to discuss your requirements with you and advise which systems are eligible for support.
What about safety and reliability?
The Clean Energy Council (CEC) provides an accreditation scheme for solar and battery installers to ensure they are across the latest safety requirements. All energy storage systems sold by providers under the Next Gen program must come from the CEC’S list of approved energy storage devices. These devices comply with ACT legislation and relevant Australian and international standards.
Providers are required to give you information on how to use your battery safely. A minimum 10-year warranty for batteries and inverters are a requirement for all providers. It is important that you check the warranty offered, and whether this will cover the way you intend to use the battery.
