Tender Description

Is there a painting in your possession too precious for a garage sale but worthy of a public hanging? If there is, Nelsonians are being urged to declutter in the name of art.
The Nelson Suter Art Society (NSAS) has announced it will be holding an inaugural exhibition of currently owned art for sale and is inviting the public to make submissions.
Preloved Reloved will be held at the McKee Gallery, within Nelson’s Suter Art Gallery from May 31 to June 13, giving an opportunity for people to sell art they own that no longer inspires them but is too valuable to put in a garage sale.
Both NSAS president Philippa Eberlein and committee member Clare Williams said they were excited by the prospect of something special brought forth from homes, estates or attics.
‘‘A lot of people might be downsizing or moving house and might be thinking
‘this doesn’t fit in our house anymore – doesn’t matter how good or bad it is,’’ Williams said.
Coming from numerous private collections, an eclectic range of art is expected. However, they appreciated some works would be too valuable to pass on.
‘‘There’s no-one who’s got a Lindauer who would be thinking ‘that’s cluttering up my wall,’’ Eberlein said.
Williams said many items would be on public view for the first time and therefore offered a rare opportunity for potential buyers to discover that unique piece they didn’t know they wanted.
‘‘When something sells, it’s done so for a reason – because it appeals – so where one person thinks it’s kitsch, another might think ‘Kitchen’.’’
At 131-years-old, the Nelson Suter Art Society is New Zealand’s third oldest art society, run by volunteers. The society’s 200 members hold exhibitions throughout the year which enables them to display their work in the McKee Gallery – a space leased from the Suter Art Gallery.
The society is now inviting expressions of interest. All preloved art is welcome, be it 2D or 3D art, photographs, ceramics, sculpture, fibre art or ethnic art.

Interested sellers should contact the Society at nelsonsuterartsociety@gmail.com

Applicants will be notified by May 16 if they are accepted.
