Matapouri Sand Replenishment Project

⁠⁠⁠This Contract is for the excavation of 15,000 cubic metres of sand (maximum amount) from the Matapouri Estuary, transporting by road to Matapouri Beach and placement and contouring at the beach. The works will also include surveying, installing marker poles, creating a temporary access for construction, and construction of three beach access stairways. The extracted sand will be placed at the erosion hot spot, the centre is at Te Wairoa Street access and extends north and south from this location.

The owners and occupiers of those properties located along the foreshore of Matapouri Beach have existing private access structures (timber stairs and sand ladders), leading down on to the beach. These have been requested to be removed by Easter 2021, so that machinery can undertake the spreading and levelling of sand without having to work around structures and potentially damaging.

On completion of the contract works Council will plant and fence the newly formed dunes. This work will be completed by other contractors. The beach front property owners will be supplying and installing their own beach access structures.
