Tender Description

Council are seeking to engage a suitably qualified printing graphic design business to supply a durable high-quality signage product along with natural timber 'look' aluminium pillars and posts that reflect the signage design intent and the style and character of Kuranda.

Mareeba Shire Council engaged an urban architectural design company to develop a modern and consistent signage concept to reflect Kuranda's reputation as a world class tourist destination aligning with the 'Village in the Rainforest' character of the visitor experience.

The design brief was to introduce built form, urban design elements to improve pedestrian comfort and wayfinding while creating a strong visual identity that improves physical access to natural attractions, tourist operations and services in the Village and surrounds.
ASPECT Studios have developed a suite of signage reflective of the design brief. The various signage hierarchies complementing each other and represented in the guidelines and specification provided.
Council in conjunction with the Kuranda Infrastructure Advisory Committee undertook extensive consultation with stakeholders and the public during the concept development stage in order to reach agreement on the style of signage that would most suit the character of Kuranda.

Natural timber was an obvious preference due to Kuranda's heritage as a timber town and its modern evolution into a nature-based tourist destination, however the difficultly in procuring a durable hard wood that could withstand the long-term rigors of the tropical North Queensland climate influenced the decision to consider a more durable aluminium product.
Preliminary Council investigation has indicated the existence of a realistic powder coated aluminium, timber 'look' finish that would provide a durable outcome acceptable to local businesses and the community as representative of the character and vibe Kuranda is trying to portray as a tourist destination.

As part of this request for quotation Council will consider alternate options for materials, provided they meet the main criteria for the look and feel of the signage as per the technical specification. A sample of alternate materials shall be provided to Council for consideration, with the response to this request for quotation. Acceptance of alternate materials offered will be solely at Councils discretion.
During the Quote assessment, Council will assess timber style options (i.e. maple, red cedar) in order to ensure an outcome suitable to the Kuranda character.
Colour or wood styles will be finalised prior to contract award with the successful respondent.
