Tender Description

Campvale Pumping Station consists of four large vertical turbine pumps with two pumps replaced in 2009 and the remaining two replaced in 2013. All four pumps discharge into two pressure chambers, which in turn discharge into a surge chamber, transferring the stormwater into Grahamstown Dam through the Campvale Canal Culvert.

The culvert consists of two concrete conduits approximately 110 m in length with a total cross-sectional area of 3.95 m sq (or 1.97 m sq per conduit).

Monitoring information of the Campvale Canal water indicates a pH range between 3.5 and 7.8 with the majority of results ranging between 3.5 and 6.5. Since the construction of the Campvale Canal Culvert, there have been a number of issues identified including concrete cracking, steel corrosion and loss of concrete cover within the conduit. An assessment of historical information has led to the conclusion that the culverts are likely to be past their notional design life and create an unacceptable risk which may result in the loss of Grahamstown storage. To mitigate this risk, the Principal is implementing the replacement of the culvert with two new pressure mains between the pumping station and the Grahamstown Dam. The existing culvert will be decommissioned once the new pressure mains are in operation.

A separate construction contract is currently underway for the replacement of the culverts and it is anticipated that the works will be completed, including restoration of the site by the end of August 2018.
