Tender Description

Derwent Valley Council (DVC) is seeking proposals from suitably qualified and experienced individuals/organisations to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the costs and works associated required to reinstate the Derwent Valley Line (the Line) and the ongoing costs of maintaining the line to:
(a) a standard that can be used safely for heritage tourism rail, and,
(b) The minimum level of required maintenance should the line remain inactive.

The Line is a section of approximately 45 km of inactive rail between the 'Boyer block' on the southern side of the Norske Skog paper mill at Boyer and National Park.

There has been no rail traffic, other than maintenance vehicles, on this section of line since approximately 2005 and no commercial rail since the mid-1990's. The condition of the line has deteriorated due to inactivity, only basic maintenance has been undertaken during this period.

The Line includes approximately:
* Estimated nine (9) mainline turnouts;
* 41 level crossings on a mix of public and private roads (most crossing warning signals have been removed, the cost of reinstating these to the required standard should be included in estimates);
* A number of bridges including one crossing Boyer Road and three (3) major crossings of the River Derwent;
* An estimated 22 culverts, and;
* Cuttings and embankments.
