Sewer flow and rainfall gauging is fundamental to the assessment of the wastewater transportation system's performance. The Principal has undertaken temporary flow and rainfall gauging in the past, which has provided information on dry and wet weather flows across all its major transport systems.
This has helped to identify broad areas where stormwater is entering the system via inflow and infiltration. In conjunction with permanent rain gauges across the catchments, the temporary flow gauging has enabled calibrated Mike Urban models of the main carrier systems to be developed, which have been used to assess their performance, and to develop system upgrade strategies.
As part of the Principals ongoing management of its wastewater transportation systems, a staged program of flow and rainfall gauging has been developed to meet asset management and capital planning needs. The Principals permanent rain gauges at key sites will provide a historical record of rain data for time series modelling, with temporary flow and rain gauges installed in specific locations from time to time.
The program will aim to enhance our existing knowledge and to expand into other areas particularly those sub catchments which experience customer complaints and as yet have not been gauged. The information collected will enable the:
* Calibration of Wastewater Transportation hydraulic models in order to refine system upgrade strategies and ensure design criteria and regulatory requirements are met;
* Identification of the extent of inflow/infiltration problem sub catchments; and
* Measurement of the effectiveness of system upgrade works.
