W H Wagener Oval is located adjacent to Whitfield Avenue, Ashbury (the Site). The Site is used primarily as an Australian Football League (AFL) sportsfield and recreational open space. Historically a former brick pit operated at the site, that was landfilled following its closure in the 1960’s with records first indicating its use as a sportsfield in 1969.

The works will include upgrades to lighting, the playing surface, and layers beneath to reduce the rate of subsidence of the Oval and improve playing conditions in accordance with the SESL Australia Pty Limited (2016) W H Wagener Sportsfield Upgrade Design (herein referred to as ‘The Design Report’. Simultaneously, an improvement of the uncontrolled landfill residue beneath the Site will be incorporated into the works. The old landfill waste is currently protected by an existing clay cap, which will be improved along with landfill gas and leachate management as additional precaution for any environmental risks associated with the historically landfilled brickpit.

The Design Report includes the following elements of work:

1. Removal of existing lighting and upgrade with new lighting;
2. Removal of the existing playing surface and subsurface and all infrastructure associated including existing irrigation and drainage pipes;
3. Retention of portions of soil from the existing sub-turf layers for blending with sand as new growth media;
4. Installation of a new stormwater drainage system;
5. Improvement of the existing cap by regrading and adding lime to the surface and compaction;
6. Trenching and installation in a new leachate collection system including a new leachate collection pit and pump to the existing Above Ground Storage tank system;
7. Trenching and installation of a new passive landfill gas venting system with whirly bird vents attached to the new lighting infrastructure;
8. Addition of 600mm compacted capping layer on to the existing clay cap, compacted and graded;
9. Resurfacing drainage / growth layers above the new clay cap;
10. Addition of a new irrigation tank, and irrigation system in sublayers of the playing surface;
11. Installation of a new turf surface;
12. Installation of a sand slit drainage system;
13. Reinstatement of the playing surface and surrounds; and
14. Landscaping, driveways and site entrance improvements
