Highway 7 - Realignment of Mitchell Highway at Guanna Hill

Tenders are invited from contractors pre-qualified with Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) under the National Prequalification System for Civil (Road and Bridge) Construction Contracts at the prequalification Roadworks Class R3 and Financial Level F25, or higher, for the construction of Realignment of Mitchell Highway at Guanna Hill.

The Mitchell Highway forms part of the Sydney to Dubbo corridor. It is an important route for freight and livestock transporters, local commuters, tourism operators, and cravenness and holiday makers. A large number of people commute daily between Molong and Orange for employment and recreational activities. Heavy vehicles make up about 16 per cent of the daily traffic.

This narrow section of the highway has a high crash rate, no overtaking opportunities, many tight curves and a rough road surface. The Sydney to Dubbo corridor strategy 2007 identified continuing safety improvements as a short term priority in rural locations on the Mitchell Highway.

Extra key facts:
* Poor efficiency on the existing alignment - there are a number of 65-85 km/h advisory speed curves on this section of the alignment, which are significantly lower than the posted speed limit 100 km/h in this section of the highway.
* Poor safety of the existing alignment- in the 5 years from January 2009 to December 2013 there were 27 crashes on this section of road.
* The crash rate for the project area is above the state average.

The proposed improvements at Guanna Hill, about 21 kilometres north of Orange, NSW, will upgrade and realign 7.2 kilometres of the Mitchell Highway towards Molong, NSW.

A pre-tender meeting and site inspection will be held at the Molong RSL Meeting Room, 22-24 Riddell St, Molong NSW 2866 at 10am on Wednesday 4 November 2015.
